Some people believe language learning is a skill you’re either born with or not. I call bull. Yes! Bull! It may be difficult, discouraging, disappointing at first, but it certainly isn’t impossible. More so, when it’s been discovered that indeed there is a wrong way of learning, which means if it’s done the right way it’ll be so much easier.
Don’t ever think it’s impossible or unachievable. With these following tips, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a language speaking guru.
- Be committed
The honest truth is if you don’t commit to it, you’ll never make it through. You must have a good reason for learning a language, because if you don’t, you’re less likely to remain motivated when the going gets tough. You must understand that although these tips work, it doesn’t mean language learning is a smooth and effortless journey. Regardless of your reasons, once you’ve decided on a language, it’s important that you commit.
- Own your mistakes
Making mistakes is inevitable, you must learn to own them. In order to learn a language, you must be ready to step out of your comfort zone and put yourself in embarrassing situations. Value fluency over accuracy. The idea behind learning a new language is to be able to speak or write it fluently. It’s easier to get accurate when fluent, than to get fluent when accurate.
- Speak it!
The best way to learn a language is to speak it constantly. You can get a native speaker or a partner who is more fluent and is willing to patiently help you practice. Studying the grammar is important as well, and should be done every day, however, you can’t truly know it if you don’t speak it out.
- Use great resources
Instead of cramming, like you would do in an exam, there are more effective ways of memorising information for long term learning. One of them is the Spaced Repetition Software (SRS). SRS are computer programs modelled after a process similar to using flashcards. They make learning faster, more fun, and also save time. FluentU is a software that allows you learn from authentic real-world content including news, inspiring talks, videos, movie trailers and music videos by turning them into proper language learning experiences. There are other apps that are useful and will be beneficial to your learning process.
- Have an inquisitive mind
If you always want to learn something new, you will never get tired. A new language is such an exciting thing to explore and there is always something new to learn. Take on new challenges that’ll push you, pursue your curiosities, have a child-like mind, and a growth mindset. Accept corrections and make new discoveries. Always keep yourself open to learn, and with the little you now, try to teach. The more you teach, the better you are at it.
These tips are sure to put you on the right track and make you an expert language learner.
