5 ways to Build your Mental Toughness

In life there are bound to be disappointments and failures. Anybody that says he/she has never experienced a setback at least once in his/her life is simply a big fat liar. And that’s the truth.

However, in as much as there are troubling times, there are those that are able to pick themselves up, dust themselves down and keep on standing. On the other hand, some people are unable to get back on their feet. The difference between these two categories of people is mental toughness. More than intelligence or talent, your mental toughness or resilience plays a key role in the achievement of your dreams or goals.

Okay, so we know that mental resilience is important, but do we know how to build/increase our mental strength? Here are 5 ways below:

  • Control your Emotions

Becoming aware and understanding your emotions will give you the power to control them. It’s good to be in touch with your emotions. It gives room for empathy, consideration, kindness and other human feelings. However, emotions can also cloud your judgement and prevent rational thinking.

Being able to control your emotions when in a tough situation can be the thing that saves you from danger and it can also increase your ability to handle any future tough situations. Emotional control is easier said than done, but it is one of the ways you can build up mental strength.

  • Be Self-motivated

In other words, be your own cheerleader. No one is going to spend all their time cheering you on every time you’re challenged with a problem. It’s left to you to push yourself, to want to strive to achieve your goals. If you really want it, you have to keep motivating yourself – use your past failures and what you hope to achieve as a motivator.

Mental toughness can only be gained through training and hard work. When you’re able to always push yourself no matter what the circumstances are, you’ll be on your way to achieving mental resilience.

  • Don’t Dwell

In order to increase your mental strength, you must be able to let bygones be just that, bygones. You must be able to say “…yes it didn’t work out right now, I’ll just have to try a different angle.” Accept failure if it comes, learn to be okay with something not working out the way you wanted, take it all in stride and try again.

One of the best ways of toughening up is by learning to delay your own gratification – patience, perseverance are just a few things that come with being mentally resilient.

  • Step out of your Comfort Zone

Sometimes you have to be uncomfortable to achieve your goals. Putting yourself in situations that aren’t the most comfortable but are necessary. When you’re able to put yourself out of your comfort zone and handle tough situations, you’ll become more confident in yourself and your abilities. Then you’re better prepared for any kind of problem that may arise in the future.

  • Manage your Expectations

One of the best ways of building your mental strength is to by being able to manage your expectations. The better you’re able to do that, the less likely you’ll be surprised by anything. There are many things beyond your control, however you CAN control how you prepare for and react to them.
